Supervise the Situation

Young children should never be left alone in or around the pool, even for a moment. They need constant adult supervision. You'll want to pay close attention to children aged 12 – 35 months old. Their capabilities change every day and they will often do something you don't expect.

  • Babysitters and guardians should always be instructed about potential hazards to young children in and around the pool and should be prepared with knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Never rely on floatation devices or swimming lessons to protect a child.
  • In an emergency, don’t wait for emergency personnel to start CPR or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Begin immediately.
  • Keep a telephone and emergency numbers by the poolside.
  • Keep rescue equipment including a shepherd’s hook and life ring easily accessible. Occasionally check the ropes on the rings as they can deteriorate.
